How to Choose LED Downlights: A Practical UK Buying Guide


Choosing downlights involves more than finding a design that looks right. The fitting also needs to suit the ceiling, room, lighting effect and installation environment.

This guide explains the main differences between fixed, adjustable, trimmed and trimless downlights, along with important considerations such as IP ratings, colour temperature, beam angle, dimming and fire performance.

Fixed or adjustable downlights?

Fixed downlights direct light straight down. They are commonly used for general lighting in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms, offices and commercial spaces.

Adjustable downlights can be tilted or rotated, allowing the light to be directed towards a particular area. They are useful for illuminating artwork, architectural features, work surfaces, displays and seating areas.

Choose a fixed fitting when you want simple, even illumination. Consider an adjustable fitting when the direction of the light is important.

Trimmed or trimless downlights?

A trimmed downlight has a visible bezel around the opening. Trimmed fittings are available in many shapes, sizes and finishes and can be suitable for a wide range of projects.

A trimless downlight is installed into the ceiling and plastered around, creating a clean and minimal appearance. Once installed correctly, the fitting appears integrated into the ceiling rather than attached to it.

Trimless fittings are popular in modern residential and architectural interiors, but they normally require more preparation and coordination during installation. The fitting should be selected before the ceiling is completed.

GU10 or integrated LED?

GU10 downlights use a replaceable GU10 lamp. This makes it relatively easy to replace the light source or change its colour temperature, beam angle or brightness later.

Integrated LED downlights have the LED light source built into the fitting. They can offer compact dimensions, specialised optics and a more coordinated design. However, the complete fitting or LED module may need attention if the light source eventually fails.

When comparing options, consider:

  • Expected lifetime

  • Warranty

  • Replaceability

  • Light output

  • Dimming compatibility

  • Colour quality

  • Availability of replacement components

There is no single correct choice. The most suitable option depends on the project, maintenance requirements and desired lighting effect.

Understanding colour temperature

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin and describes whether white light appears warm or cool.

2700K: warm white

This produces a warm, comfortable appearance similar to traditional incandescent lighting. It is often selected for bedrooms, living rooms, restaurants and hospitality settings.

3000K: warm to neutral white

A popular option for contemporary homes, kitchens, hallways, shops and hospitality projects. It provides a clean appearance while retaining some warmth.

4000K: neutral or cool white

This creates a brighter and more functional appearance. It is commonly used in offices, work areas, utility spaces and some commercial environments.

Try to maintain a consistent colour temperature within connected spaces unless a deliberate contrast forms part of the lighting design.

Lumens and wattage

Wattage tells you how much power a fitting consumes. Lumens describe the quantity of visible light it produces.

When comparing LED downlights, focus on lumens rather than wattage alone. Two fittings using the same wattage can produce different light outputs because their efficiency, optics and construction differ.

The total number of lumens required depends on the room size, ceiling height, surface colours, purpose of the space and contribution from other light sources.

Choosing the right beam angle

Beam angle describes how widely a downlight distributes its light.

A narrow beam produces a more concentrated pool of light and can be effective for highlighting artwork, displays or architectural details. A wider beam spreads light across a larger area and is generally more suitable for ambient illumination.

Using only narrow beams for general lighting can create bright spots with dark areas between them. Very wide beams may provide less emphasis and direction. Many projects benefit from combining general and accent lighting.

Glare and visual comfort

Brightness alone does not determine whether a downlight is comfortable to use. A bright LED that is directly visible can cause glare, particularly in rooms with low ceilings or where people spend time looking upwards.

Deep-recessed light sources, suitable reflectors and carefully selected beam angles can help reduce glare. Product specifications may also include a Unified Glare Rating, usually written as UGR, although the suitability of a fitting depends on the complete room and lighting layout.

Consider visual comfort particularly in offices, dining areas, bedrooms, hospitality spaces and rooms containing screens.

IP ratings and bathroom downlights

An IP rating describes the protection a fitting provides against solid objects and moisture. The required protection depends on where the fitting will be installed.

Bathrooms are divided into electrical zones according to their proximity to a bath or shower. Under BS 7671 guidance, equipment installed in bathroom Zones 1 and 2 generally requires protection of at least IPX4, or IPX5 where water jets are likely.

An IP rating should not be selected based on the room name alone. The exact position of the fitting and the bathroom layout must be considered.

Do downlights need to be fire-rated?

Cutting an opening for a recessed downlight can affect the performance of a ceiling. Where the ceiling forms part of a fire-resisting construction, the selected fitting and installation must not undermine the required fire performance.

Whether a particular downlight needs a fire rating—and the appropriate rating—depends on the building, ceiling construction and applicable requirements. A product being described as “fire-rated” does not automatically make it suitable for every ceiling assembly.

Ask a competent electrician, building professional or building control body to confirm the requirements for your project. Government guidance is available in Approved Document B.

Dimming compatibility

If you want adjustable light levels, confirm that the complete system is compatible. The downlight or lamp, LED driver and dimmer must be designed to work together.

An incompatible combination may result in:

  • Flickering

  • Buzzing

  • Limited dimming range

  • Lights failing to switch off completely

  • Unstable performance

  • Reduced component life

Check the product and driver specifications before purchasing a dimmer. For larger installations, it may be helpful to test a sample combination before ordering the complete quantity.

Cut-out size and ceiling depth

Before ordering recessed downlights, confirm:

  • Ceiling cut-out diameter

  • Fitting depth

  • Driver dimensions

  • Space required for ventilation

  • Position of ceiling joists

  • Insulation requirements

  • Access for installation and maintenance

Do not choose a fitting based only on the visible bezel diameter. The hidden part of the downlight and its driver must fit safely within the available ceiling space.

If you are replacing existing downlights, measure the current openings carefully. A fitting that is only slightly smaller than the existing cut-out may not be properly supported.

Colour rendering

The Colour Rendering Index, or CRI, indicates how naturally colours appear under a light source. A higher CRI can be particularly valuable in kitchens, bathrooms, retail displays, galleries, restaurants and interiors where material finishes are important.

CRI is only one measure of light quality, but it is useful when comparing products intended for the same application.

How far apart should downlights be?

There is no universal spacing measurement that works for every room.

Appropriate spacing depends on:

  • Ceiling height

  • Beam angle

  • Light output

  • Room dimensions

  • Surface colours

  • Furniture layout

  • Required lighting level

  • Other sources of light

Start with the activity taking place in the room. A kitchen worktop, dining table, hallway and retail display have different lighting requirements. Downlights should support the layout rather than simply being arranged in a uniform ceiling grid.

For larger or more complex projects, a lighting layout or calculation can help determine appropriate quantities and positions.

A downlight selection checklist

Before choosing a downlight, confirm:

  • Is it fixed or adjustable?

  • Do you want a trimmed or trimless appearance?

  • Will it use a GU10 lamp or integrated LED?

  • What colour temperature is required?

  • How many lumens does it produce?

  • What is the beam angle?

  • Is glare control important?

  • Does the installation require an IP rating?

  • Does the ceiling have fire-performance requirements?

  • Is the fitting dimmable?

  • Is it compatible with the proposed dimmer?

  • What cut-out size and installation depth are required?

  • What finish and shape suit the interior?

  • What warranty is provided?
